Run a quick internet search for any consumer service and the results will astound you. Pages and pages of businesses all competing in the same area for the same market.

Their products may be the same, their premises may look alike, their customer service top notch.

So what is the point of difference that will see customers select one business over another?

More often than not it is the “Y” behind the brand, and the “Y” story is a story every business should take the time to tell.

Each business has a unique reason for Y they do what they do and how they came to do it.

Telling this story to consumers provides a critical insight of who you are and what you offer.

The internet has made sharing the why behind your business easier with about pages, staff profiles, blogs and more to give a history of a company and allow consumers to form connections.

It is the “Y” that makes a service personal, relatable and unique.

But it’s also a vital component in public relations strategy as a whole, giving the public a reference point when they consider your services and industry.

“Oh that’s Joe’s plumbing, he’s a third generation plumber whose family has worked in Sydney since the days when outhouses were still around.”

“Noosa Whole Foods – I know them – the woman who started that built her business from a market stall when her children were small and it’s now it a national distributor of Australian-made products.”

This back story (the Y behind the brand) is often more intriguing than any product or service on offer, establishing a personal connection in an impersonal world.

And it is that Y that allows clients, the public and the media to connect with you.
