“Busy is the new stupid!”
I heard this saying a little while ago, and I realised just how often the word ‘busy’ is being used these days. In fact, when we greet a friend or colleague and ask “So how are you?”, perhaps the most common answer these days is “Busy!”, “SO Busy” or maybe even “CRAZY Busy”. What we don’t hear very often is “Really well thanks!”
So if ‘CRAZY BUSY’ has replaced ‘REALLY WELL’ – then yes, I think that’s stupid!
You can’t pour from an empty cup, so whether you are leading a business, a team or a family, putting your own health and wellbeing first, is a MUST!
To help create thriving businesses where individuals can also flourish, I believe that applying my 6 Pillars of Wellbeing, can help. Because as it turns out, BEING well and LEADING well, have a lot in common!
1: Sleep Well – A good day starts the night before
According to the latest report by the Sleep Health Foundation, 53% of Australian adults have inadequate duration or quality of sleep. WOW – that’s frightening. And as it turns out, yes, the average adult really does need 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Sure, you can survive on less, but you definitely won’t thrive.
2: Eat Nourishingly – Fuel your body
All things in moderation is still a great recipe to follow, as is the saying that ‘fresh is best’. And if you want to have a healthy relationship with food, then Mindful Eating could be the answer. Eat when you’re hungry, slow it down, and feel your fullness.
3: Hydrate Often – For physical and mental wellbeing
The first trick is not to mistake hunger for thirst. Our bodies are over two-thirds water, so keeping hydrated is essential for both our bodies and our brains. How much do we need? Yep – for most adults, 8 glasses of water a day is the magic number. So if you want to feel great, remember to hydrate!
4: Breathe Easy – Mind, body and breath are all connected
Learning to breathe deeply and with awareness provides so many health benefits. As we breathe in, we take in oxygen, invigorating our red blood cells, and as we breath out, we release about 70% of all toxins from our body.
5: Move Your Body – For strength and agility
If sitting is the new smoking, then this needs our attention! Perhaps we need to put down our devices, step away from the desk or get off the couch, and simply get up and move, or as I sometimes prefer – get up and groove!
6: Find Your Mojo – Connect to what makes you special
This is as much about our minds as it is about our bodies. We are all unique, we all have something special inside us. Find it and celebrate it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same! So be true and be YOU!
So now that you’ve put your own oxygen mask on first, and invested in your own health and wellbeing, only then are we ready to help others grow. And that’s exactly what true leaders do!
