“Never think of adversity as your enemy, think of it as your ally.
Why? Because it’s necessary for your growth and success.”
As a serial entrepreneur and multimedia artist, I felt a desire to make a difference through my work. So I put together a unique music and film multimedia project called X: The Human Condition, created as a “message in a bottle” to go out to all those who felt like they didn’t fit in, and couldn’t find their place in the world, which is how I myself felt. I wanted to inspire people to never give up.
But all the people in the entertainment industry that I went to told me it was impossible to achieve. Despite what they said I attempted to do it on my own, because I felt it was my mission.
It took 12 years.
I self-financed the film through my business, but during post-production, I found myself faced with the realization that I was close to bankruptcy.
At the same time. I fell ill, nearly losing my vision permanently after a misdiagnosis by the head of a prominent New York hospital eye department. Then came another diagnosis of chronic kidney disease. I found myself falling from health and prosperity down to hopelessness within a matter of days.
However, despite what the “experts” said, after two years of setback after setback, I was eventually cured through nutrition and alternative medicine. A fortunate second opinion saved my vision. Through determination of will, I saved my business, and the multimedia project, X: The Human Condition was positively received throughout the world.
I understood that I had a greater mission. To inspire people to believe that no matter what happens to you, no matter how many times you fall, you can always rise again. So, my story led me to the creation of the nonprofit website RiseUpEight (based on the Japanese proverb, “fall down seven times, stand up eight”).
The website features interviews with both celebrities and ordinary folks from all over the world focusing on how they overcame adversity, furthering the exploration of the human condition that began with X: The Human Condition.
And now, with the original intention of “you are not alone”, we are creating a real community of people worldwide, sharing our stories of overcoming adversity. Each story is an individual’s story of their own journey, but by sharing their story, our stories are proof that you are not alone, because we are coming together as a community, collectively inspiring others to never give up… And all of this came to be because of a desire to make a difference in the world and how I would not take the expert’s advice.
The moral of my story is don’t let anyone tell you what is possible and what is impossible. Only you can determine that. As humans, we have the inherent ability to adapt to whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. Learn from others who have experienced adversity and how they got through it. Gain inspiration from them for your own life. No matter what you’re going through, realize that it’s only temporary and that you will come through the other side wiser, stronger and one level above where you were before. Level up!
